About Stefanie Posavec

Stefanie Posavec is a designer, artist, and author focused on creating playful, accessible, human-scaled approaches to how we communicate data and use it creatively.

Her data-driven work has been exhibited at major galleries including the V&A, the Design Museum, Somerset House, the Wellcome Collection, Bletchley Park, the Centre Pompidou (Paris), and MoMA (New York). Her work is also in the permanent collection of MoMA and was nominated for the Design Museum’s ‘Designs of the Year’ 2016. Recently she undertook the book design and art direction of chart creation for the activist Greta Thunberg’s much-lauded The Climate Book.

Her latest illustrated book (I am a book. I am a portal to the universe., co-authored with Miriam Quick) has received multiple accolades, including winning the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize 2021. She has also co-authored two books that emphasise a handmade, personal approach to data: Dear Data and the journal Observe, Collect, Draw!

Dataviz sketching session

How would your approach within a data-driven project change if you started by sketching offscreen instead of jumping directly into visualisation software or code?

In this session, participants undertake a series of fast-paced drawing challenges that teach design strategies for quick off-screen ideation when coming up with creative, custom visualisation methods for any output, software, or design field.

Prerequisites: (very) basic spreadsheet skills. No drawing skills necessary!

  • Why start by drawing your data?
  • Introduction to rule-based drawing as an approach to creating a data visualisation.
  • Quick offscreen visualisation techniques: learning approaches to quickly sketch visualisation ideas and push visual experimentation.

The entire workshop will be off-screen.
